What is a crown?
A crown is a cap placed over a tooth to restore the tooth to its original shape and size.
When are crowns recommended?
Crowns are used for a variety of reasons. If a cavity has eaten away a large portion of a tooth, a crown
may be needed to support the filling. A crown is also used to strengthen a weak tooth, to restore a broken tooth,
to support a bridge, or to cover a misshapen or discolored tooth.
Are there different types of crowns?
Yes. Crowns can be made from different materials, including gold alloy, porcelain, composite, or a combination of materials.
Your dentist can determine which material is right for your particular need.
What is involved in getting a crown?
At least two appointments are generally needed in the process of placing a crown. In the first appointment the dentist will
generally prepare the tooth for the placement of the crown and take an impression of the original tooth to determine the shape of the
crown. The dentist will also probably place a temporary crown on the tooth while the permanent crown is being made. In the second
appointment the dentist will place, adjust, and cement the final crown.
Caring for crowns
Brushing and flossing daily are essential for maintaining the crown. Regular dental checkups will also increase the life of your crown.
